A PEEP valve is a spring-loaded valve that the patient exhales against. When using a mechanical ventir, the PEEP setting is one of the simplest and most fundamental options. A tiny PEEP valve can be attached to the expiratory port of a bag valve ventilation device to achieve this effect. Instead of letting the lung pressure drop to atmospheric levels at the end of expiration, a PEEP valve keeps a tiny amount of pressure in the lung. The air pressure inside the lungs exerts a force that keeps the alveoli spread apart. By using PEEP, we may effectively reverse the process of collapse at the end of expiration.
